Google CEO Eric Schmidt: The Correct Term is to Replicate!

Tags: mobile

I finally got around to catching up on Google CEO Eric Schmidt's address to the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona last week.  Pick it up at the 7:11 mark when he talks about cloud computing and says:

"people always say I want to copy from here to there it's the wrong terminology the right terminology is to replicate"

I couldn't agree more, replication has been a feature in Lotus Notes for 2 decades now.

1 - Copy != Replication.

Copy implies overwriting existing content with a new copy of a file. This is bandwidth intensive and doesn't take into account conflicts.

Replication is much more nuanced (and helpful). Emoticon

2 - The funny thing is, although it's been a core part of Lotus software for 20 years, it seems that they would love to replace it with "sync".
(the replication page is now "Replication, sync, and Xerox" and other examples over at the notesdesignblog)

3 - In case you were wondering about Sync vs. Replication in the evolving Notes world:
