1 - I've often wondered why America doesn't have more roundabouts, traffic lights always seemed an expensive solution to me, especially in rural areas.

2 - In the Boston area there are a few, but mostly where more than 4 roads converge.
My Texas-born (then-)wife thought they were very confusing at first.
And from what I see when it comes to drivers here in Texas, it would be chaos in a roundabout, it is simply too complex for them. Binary (stop/drive, or red/green) works, but merging, switching lanes and exiting in the right place are hard concepts to learn.
Of course, in Sweden they go to extremes, I seen small intersections in subdivisions with a miniature roundabout just to slow down the cars even more...
