Message Recall – another reminder and word of caution

I have mentioned before that in Notes 8 not only is Message Recall  introduced as a new feature, but it is also enabled by default.  There was much debate about this when the decision was made, and I disagreed with the decision to enable by default, there are too many issues that need to considered for your organization before turning it on.  I am going to focus here on only one issue end user training.  Will the end user understand what mail can and can not be recalled?  I am going to say no, this is at least the third occasion I have received a mail recall message in my inbox from outside my organization.  Now I have no expectation that Lotus Notes will magically reach out across the internet and grab a message back for me, but do most of your mail users understand or care about the final destination of their mail?  Mine don’t, however if your user wants to use mail recall, they are going to have to understand where it will and will not  work.  So what happens when you try to recall an internet message?  Here it is, this is what landed in my inbox when the sender tried to recall A picture named M2 Mail recall is a nice feature to have, and one day when I do implement in my organization might even save me one of those panicked phone calls from someone who hit send just a little to fast, but in this case the message is not only not getting recalled, but this message in  inbox  is screaming at me to read the original  message!   So clearly there are some improvements needed in the process, before I am ready to let it out in the wild.

Notes and Domino 8 is out!

Looks like it’s a popular download item, my downloads from IBM usually go much faster then this, but it’s worth the wait. nd8download.jpg

What do you want the Sametime Tray Icon to do in Notes 8?

I have previously mentioned the complexity of the Sametime menus in Notes 8, another one of my complaints has been with how the Sametime Tray icon performs differently in Notes 8, as opposed to the Stand-alone Sametime 7.5.1 client. There are obviously some issues with what is the correct way to implement this, now is your chance, head on over to Mary Beth Raven’s blog and put your two cents in. I think I am leaning towards option 3, but giving the user the choice to float sametime, or launch the entire client.

Some Notes and Domino 8 Technotes

Technotes for ND8 have been making their way out for the last couple of weeks, here are some that popped up yesterday covering some of the new features in ND8 1. Article on message recall how it works and how to configure, and of course read the fine print

Because Lotus Notes mail can be read offline, with the user disconnected from a network, the read and unread status of a local replica of a mail file can be different from that of a server-based copy until replication takes place. Thus, a recall request sent to the server may report that a message was unread when, in fact, the user read it offline.

After much debate mail recall will be enabled by default, so make sure you check those settings when upgrading or installing. 2. Recent contacts is a new feature in Notes 8 which saves your 2000 most recent contacts to a special view in your inbox, see these technotes on deleting recent contacts, and on disabling the feature.. 3. Here is an article on Domino Fast Server Restart which is supposed to allow a new instance of Domino to start while a crashed instance is still running NSD. Make sure to check this point on memory requirements at the end of the note

To ensure satisfactory performance of the new Domino instance while NSD is collecting data, it is recommended to have double the amount of physical memory available. Specifically, if the Domino instance uses up to 4 GB of physical memory, it is recommended that the new instance of Domino has access to an additional 4 GB of physical memory.

4. Finally for blackberry users, here is a note on BES support under Domino 8
