Connectivity to extst.ibm.com…… a complaint

As I mentioned a while back my ability to connect in to the IBM Sametime environment regularly makes my life easier, so it continue to frustrate me that almost a month after Notes 8.0.1 shipped the embedded Sametime client still can not access the extst.ibm.com servers.  Chris Pepin blogged about this recently and others commented there as well.  So someone please explain to me how the product is GA and shipping, but IBM seems to consider it a risk to the stability of the Sametime server?  I haven’t seen the bleedyellow IM server have any issues, and I know plenty of people connecting to it with the Notes 8.0.1 client . IBM please fix this recurring issue once and for all, I am not even going to ask for support of Beta builds, but if you ship it and expect customers to implement it, you should support it.

This story does not have a happy ending…… and how stupid is my town

Disclaimer – this story does not end well for the deer so proceed with caution.

When I arrived home this evening I was informed I was told there was a deer in my backyard sitting and eating. Now deer sightings are rather common by my house (along with wild Turkeys, rabbits, ground-hogs, and others which is kind of fascinating for a guy who grew up in Brooklyn), but they rarely are sitting and don’t usually stay in one place for long so I suspected it was injured. I stepped out on the patio, the deer tried to stand but obviously could not.

I called the towns animal control hotline, they dispatched an “Animal Control Officer” who informed me the deer had been hit by a car, and it’s hind legs were broken. The procedure apparently is to call the police who will come and euthanize the deer.

Now I really had no problem with the plan so far, first of all the animal was obviously in pain and frightened, second of all we clearly have to many of them around here since there is a plan in place to reduce the deer population which ironically ends tomorrow.

Now here is where they lost me, the police will carry out the act of euthanizing the animal, then animal control will drag the animal in front of my house AND LEAVE IT THERE, but don’t worry most likely the Public Works department will show up some time tomorrow and remove it.

First of all, is it really appropriate to just leave it there on the street for all to see. Second of all this is not exactly the sight I need to greet my four year old daughter when we leave for school in the morning (distracting a four year old while all this transpired is a whole different story, but we pulled that off). Well it was too late in the day to get anyone else from the town involved, though I tried, so they carried out their brilliant plan.

Fortunately the snow pile is big enough that it is not really visible from the house window, but I have received some curious calls from the neighbors. I suspect I will be speaking to the mayors office tomorrow.

OK I promise back to writing about Lotus Connections/TDI tomorrow just thought I would share the events of the evening.

Broken Scaphoid Update

Today I went to a hand specialist for a second opinion.  The good news, I am not getting the case pictured here, the hopefully even better news is for now no surgery either.  They made a custom splint for my hand, which is not really as comfortable as the one I have had for the last couple of weeks, but is better designed to allow the injury to heal, and can be removed occasionally.  In general I can still type with my left hand, but my left thumb can not get anywhere near the keyboard.  So here is what the hand looks like now A picture named M2 It will be like this for the next two weeks, then I see the doctor again.

It's Broken

The doctor finally called this morning with the MRI results telling me what I have known for a week already, my scaphoid is broken.  I have the following choices now, the first is to let them put a cast on, the cast they want to put on would look like this A picture named M2 and be on for 8 weeks minimum. The other option surgery where they will put a screw in the bone,, this would leave me with a splint similar to what I have had for the last week, and physical therapy on the hand. Decision coming soon.

My (possibly broken) Scaphoid Bone

If you never heard of the Scaphoid bone, well neither did I until yesterday, but the on my left wrist might be broken.  This all started back on Super Bowl Sunday when I took my daughter ice skating, and took a little spill.  Last week I had made an appointment to get the hand x-rayed, but the Dr. cancelled, and it was feeling better so I never rescheduled.  The hand though continued to have pain, even when not being used, so yesterday I had it x-rayed.  The x-ray does not show a break, but apparently x-rays can not conclusively see a break in the Scaphoid bone, so next up is an MRI on Thursday evening.  For now the hand is in a splint and in a fair amount of pain, not to mention slowing down my typing quite a bit.  I don’t know, going skating seemed like a good idea at the time, and Molly seemed to enjoy it, she even asked to go again this Sunday, but I am not sure how fast that is going to happen.

Spam Filters, Flat Tires, Blown leads…. and one bright spot

The last 2 days has gone something like this.  Yesterday around 11 AM I received a call from the office, it seems the Spam filter had for no reason at all decided to start acting up to the point that either no mail was flowing in, or all the mail spam included was getting through.  So while I had intended to be seated in front of the TV watching the Mets at 1 PM on Sunday instead I was on a conference call working on a stubborn spam filter.   Speaking of the Mets, well I guess I didn’t miss much, the game was apparently over in the first inning. So lets review on September 13th the Mets were in great shape with a 6.5 game lead and 17 games to play. A picture named M2 yet here we are 2 weeks later, and the season ended like this A picture named M3 The Mets managed to go 5-12 down the stretch while the Phillies went 12-4 to take the division.  So now it is October baseball without the Mets which is a huge disappointment. The lone bright spot of the weekend was the Giants defeating the Eagles and in the process tying an NFL Sack record.  The Giants not exactly off to a great start this season at least saved me a little aggravation from a few friends of mine who happen to be Phillies and Eagles Fans. So fast forward to this afternoon, when I was on a conference call reviewing yes you guessed it the spam filter, when my wife arrived home and informed me she had a flat tire, which granted in the grand scheme of car troubles I would take a flat tire over most other problems.  I did manage to remove the flat and install the spare tire, all while remaining on the previously mentioned conference call. So all that is left to figure out now is who to root for in the playoffs, I think it is finally the Cubs turn to win this year after all they recently won a World Series 99 years ago.  So my playoff teams are the Cubs, and whoever is playing the Yankees. Just remember 138 days until pitchers and catchers report to spring training.
