Hill Street Blues!

Many of you who follow me have heard me refer many times to the hill I live up, mainly in the context of snow, where I have a simple strategy get up the hill before it snows, or stay down until they plow (or at least plan on leaving your car down the hill).  I thought I would try to give you an idea of what the hill actually looks like with these 2 videos. These were taken a few weeks ago, before the Blizzard.

For the curious, videos were taken on a Droid X, mounted on the windshield in the Droid X Car Mount.

Some Tips for Traveler on Android

Having the gold release of Traveler for Android on my phone now for a bit of time, I though I would share some tips for optimizing the Traveler experience on an Android Device.  I am showing Traveler on my Droid X, depending on your device your mileage may vary (remember Traveler for Android is supported on devices running Android 2.0 and later).

Traveler will install 5 icons in total on your Android device, they are

installer The installer is downloaded from the Traveler Server and used to install the other applications

mail calendar These two should be obvious

lookup Used to search the directory

Notes Traveler This is where options are set for Traveler, and where I am going to show a few settings I changed to better suit my needs.

After Launching Notes Traveler use the Menu key on your device to bring up the settings menu, and select Applications

applications

The first setting I like to tweak is the Signature option, by default it is enabled and set to “Sent by Lotus Notes Traveler” My personal preference is no signature at all, but even in cases where I want a signature, I never use a device specific one, so I simply disable, you can disable or set the default to suit your preferences:

3-a

The next step is to customize the Inbox view, and notification settings, from the Applications Menu select preferences:

3-b

The Message Preview option determines what you in your inbox, and also as a result how many messages will appear on your screen at once.  On the left is an example using message preview, on the right is an example with preview off:

5 - Preview Enabled 6 - Preview Disabled

As you can see disabling message preview gives you 3 to 4 more messages per screen, personally I prefer to see more messages per screen and forgo the preview.

While in Preferences you can also set your notification options on receipt of new mail:

4-b

Finally the last option I am going to cover today is Auto Sync which you can use to control how frequently your Device syncs with the server.  There are two periods you can define, peak and off-peak, the default is for peak to be “Always Connected”, and off-peak “Every 15 minutes” To access these preferences select the Auto Sync option from the Settings menu, here you can set the peak and off peak time windows as well as the sync option for each:

Auto Sync 9 - peak off peak options

As you can see I have changed my peak time period from “Always Connected” to “Every 15 minutes”, I find it is less of a drain on battery life (again you know I worry about these things), and I can always initiate a manual sync from my inbox if I need something more immediate.

I hope these tips help you customize your Traveler on Android experience, and if you have a good tip, do please leave a comment.

Images of Blizzard 2010

Images of the December 2010 Blizzard, I cleared about 6″ of snow at 6PM Sunday, Monday morning I didn’t measure, but we easily had another 15″ maybe even more, hard to tell with all the wind howling around.  The snow actually exceeded the capacity of my snow blower, but it did a good job making a couple of passes over each spot.  With out the snow blower… well I don’t even want to think about it.  The kids had a good time playing in the snow, and got a day off from school (they are not on vacation this week).

Lotus Connections 3.0 Fixes available on Fix Central

The first Lotus Connections 3.0 fixes are available on Fix Central, the first one L057305 “INSTALL: Resolve forum migration issue when using dbWizards GUI mode.” is important (see below for instructions) you should address before running your Database Wizards.  The second ne L057308 “INSTALL: Change server names post install for Lotus Connections 3.0.” is optional (see below for details) but is only needed if you want to change your server names after installation.

fixes all

There are links for more information on each fix with instructions

L057305

“Install Instructions:
Before you executing db wizards, only need to unzip LO57305.zip and replace the Wizards.jar file with the new file in Wizards/lib directory, i.e E:\LC3.0\Wizards\lib”

L057308 – This one is optional, you only need it if you want to rename your WAS Server names after installing Lotus Connections 3.0 – good to know it’s there should you need it, better plan ahead and get your names right before installing.

iTunes You Drive me Crazy

I am not a big iTunes fan, but I use it to sync music to my Second Generation iPod Shuffle.  I really like the shuffle, I don’t deal with playlists, a concept I can’t seem to wrap my head around creating and managing. With the Shuffle I just sync the device put it on shuffle and go.  The shuffle also has great battery life, one charge lasts more then a week of heavy usage, while also letting me listen to music with out draining the battery on my phone (you know I worry about these things).

Today I decided it was time to change out some of the music on the shuffle, and in the process learnt something new.  Here is the view of the shuffle in iTunes, you will notice it is sorted by artist A to Z:

itunes a to z

In the process of looking through for items to remove I changed the sort view a few times to look at different views. When I went back to listening to music, I found that the forward button on the shuffle was moving backwards through the alphabet, and the back button was moving forwards.  This was driving me crazy.  Finally a colleague of mine suggested that I check the sort order in iTunes.  So I opened iTunes back up and sure enough it looked like this, sorted Z to A:

itunes z to a

Once I changed the sort order back to A to Z and synced again it was all back to normal forward was forward and back was back.

I never would have thought that the current view in iTunes would sync to the iPod but sure enough it does.  I have had this shuffle for a while and never run in to this before, live and learn.

Disabling Transaction Logging on a Server running DAOS

If you are running DAOS, you know that Transaction Logging is a prerequisite to enable DAOS on your server.  Ever wondered what would happen if you turned Transaction Logging off?  I tried it, and am actually really pleased with how this was implemented.

When you go in to your server document and change Transaction Logging to Disabled, when you save the document you get this warning:

daos-tlog1

and then when you say OK you get this:

daos-tlog2

What is happening here is any new attachments will now be stored in the NSF file, instead of the DAOS store (obviously losing any DAOS benefits), but the key is that any attachments already stored in the DAOS store will continue to work just fine, when a document is accessed the associated attachment will be there as it was when Transaction Logging was enabled.

I am of course not suggesting that you go try this on your production servers, but it is nice to see that there is some resiliency built in to DAOS, and should anything go wrong with your Transaction Logs, DAOS will keep serving up attachments.

After transaction logging is re-enabled attachments will automatically go back to being stored in the DAOS store, however you will have to run a Compact –c on all databases to get the attachments that were stored in the NSF while Transaction Logging was disabled moved to DAOS.

If by some chance you have not yet looked at DAOS, you might want to grab the DAOS Estimator tool and start calculating your potential disk savings, and don’t forget the impact DAOS can have on your backups as well.
